Frequently Asked Questions
What Happens During a Chiropractic Adjustment
A chiropractic adjustment involves a controlled, high-velocity thrust applied to a specific spinal joint. The goal is to restore movement to a joint that has become restricted — typically due to prolonged poor posture, an acute injury or repetitive strain patterns built up over time.
The audible "pop" you may hear is called cavitation — a rapid change in joint pressure causes dissolved gases to briefly form a bubble. It is entirely normal and harmless. The therapeutic benefit comes from restoring normal joint mechanics, decompressing surrounding nerves and triggering a neurological response that relaxes the muscles around the treated segment.
Not all chiropractic treatment involves audible adjustments. Mobilisation (slower, rhythmic joint movement), instrument-assisted adjusting and soft tissue techniques are used alongside or instead of manipulation depending on your presentation and preference — particularly for patients who prefer a gentler approach or have specific contraindications.
Safety & Suitability
Chiropractic treatment is safe for the vast majority of musculoskeletal complaints. Before any treatment begins, we take a full medical history and perform an orthopaedic and neurological assessment to confirm it is appropriate for you. Chiropractic is not suitable for certain conditions — acute fractures, severe osteoporosis, active malignancy near the treatment area, or specific vascular conditions — all of which we screen for at your first session.
Pregnancy is not a contraindication. We adapt techniques specifically for prenatal patients. Older patients and those with osteoarthritis often respond very well to gentler mobilisation techniques rather than manipulation.
If you are unsure whether chiropractic is right for your specific situation, call us on 07903 579600 and we will give you an honest assessment before you book.
Serving Barbican, Old Street, Clerkenwell & Beyond
Active Care Chiropractic is at 193 Whitecross Street — a 5-minute walk from Barbican tube station (Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines) and 7 minutes from Old Street (Northern line). We sit at the intersection of Clerkenwell, Moorgate and Shoreditch, making us one of central London's most accessible specialist clinics.
Our patients come from across the EC1 and EC2 postcodes — office workers in the Finsbury Square and Moorfields area, tech workers around the Old Street Roundabout, and residents of Clerkenwell, Islington and Barbican. If you work in the City or Silicon Roundabout, we offer same-day and lunchtime slots to fit around a working day without the travel time of a trip to the West End.
